Sport and leisure activities

Interested in participating in accessible sport and leisure activities? Awarded with just under half a million pounds by the National Lottery Community Fund, Sight Life’s New places, New Experiences project is working with activity providers such as leisure centres, adult learning centres, theatres, sports clubs and community groups to make activities more accessible and welcoming. We also want to support blind and partially sighted people to develop their the skills and confidence. We hope that with support they will be able to organise activities both for themselves and for other people with sight loss.

Tafsila Khan from Cardiff tells us why this project is important to her:

“I really want to go to my local leisure centre and swim without support; but I’m worried about going on my own since my sight has deteriorated. This project will help me do this and a lot more. By talking to organisations like leisure centres about the issues I face, hopefully they will make some simple changes to make it easier and more enjoyable for me and others whose sight condition can make daily tasks really challenging.”

What will the project do?

The project will transform the number of accessible opportunities people have to take part in sport, leisure and interest activities across South Wales. We know how much joy and confidence it brings. This is part of an ongoing four year project. It will help thousands of blind and partially sighted people across South Wales to take part in sport, leisure and interest activities. Activities such as tennis, swimming, outdoor adventure, and arts and crafts. Project staff advise providers on making small changes to their services to make them accessible. They can also arrange taster sessions, coaching and open days. Call us if you want to find out more or if a particular activity interests you.
