Sight Life, formerly known as Cardiff Institute for the Blind until October 2019, offers a wide range of local services to support blind and partially sighted people across much of South Wales. Our mission is to help people live independent, active, social, and fulfilling lives. Established in 1865, we are one of Wales' oldest charities. We are proud to have rugby legend Sir Gareth Edwards, CBE, as our President, and Wales' renowned female impersonator, Ceri Dupree, as our patron.

June certainly brought plenty of sunshine (and weather warnings!) to Rhondda Cynon Taf, along with a busy and enjoyable month of activities for our members.
Our Young at Heart social group enjoyed a fantastic trip to Barry Island with our friends from Transport for Wales and the Confidence to Travel scheme. Members had a wonderful traditional day at the seaside, enjoying fish and chips on the promenade, ice cream, doughnuts, and even a paddle in the sea.
June also included a sunny visit to Barry Sidings Countryside Park in Trehafod. Members enjoyed a leisurely walk along the river to the park, followed by delicious food and great company at the café.
Across our other RCT groups, there was plenty happening too, with speakers from Care & Repair’s benefit specialists, Welsh Water’s vulnerable customer team as well as a healthy dose of social time, quizzes and interactive stories.
Our Pontyclun & District sight loss group recently welcomed the RCT Community Voice team and is delighted to be collaborating on their Access to Services project. We are excited to be involved in an initiative that gives our members the opportunity to share their experiences and perspectives, helping to inform and shape future council services and decisions.
June also marked the beginning of an exciting new collaboration with Coleg y Cymoedd, Nantgarw. RCT Members were invited to help consult on and test the accessibility of the college’s Light and Sight project, working alongside ALN Physics students and their brilliant lecturer, Steve Chapman.
The session provided a unique opportunity for our members to explore and give feedback on a range of interactive, tactile learning resources, including models of the solar system and sound waves with the aim of making science more accessible and inclusive for people with sight loss.
June also brought Volunteers’ Week, providing the perfect opportunity to celebrate with a party at the Sight Life office to thank our incredible volunteers for their commitment and contribution to our wonderful charity and our members.
Did you know that we have groups in Pontypridd, Aberdare, Pontyclun, Treorchy and a Young at Heart group?

Last week we had a well-being short walk from our office to Bute Park. The walk was a gentle stroll for members to enjoy a social walk and to safely experience the park.

The weather was very warm so we kept to the paths under the trees for shade, which led us to the musical instruments in the park which we had great fun playing.

After a short break for cold drinks and ice creams we walked back to the office.
One of the members thoroughly enjoyed the walk, she hadn't been in Bute Park for over 20 years. The walk was so successful we will have another one on Wednesday 22 July.

Thank you to our volunteer sighted guides, as always we couldn't have these activities without your help.

Our Gardening gang have been busy at our allotment at Rhyd y pennau all through April, May and June, making sure all the vegetable and flower beds are well watered and everything is growing well.

It is a lovely area for a relax and chat under the gazebo, members and volunteers all enjoy a tea break and natter too.
Well done to our gardeners.
